How to Remove a Color from an Image and Enhance Your Listings

When you are working on real estate images, certain colors can sometimes steal the show completely. They can distract buyers from noticing the real beauty of the home. For instance, if the lawn in front of the house is looking too green or the sky is looking too blue, it may get noticed more than the building. In this case, you may want to tone down the sky or the lawn so that the focus remains on the home.

Although color removal can be done manually, using specific tools designed for it can make your work simple and less tedious and give you precise results at the same time. Here’s a step-by-step guide on using popular tools like Photoshop, Canva, and Lightroom to remove a color from an image and make your listings stand out.

How to Remove a Color from an Image in Photoshop

Photoshop gives you powerful tools that help you remove and precisely control colors in an image. Here is how you can do it.

Method 1: Color Range Tool

This tool is mainly used to pinpoint a color and remove it with precision.

  1. Open your image: First open your image in Photoshop and to keep your changes non-destructible, duplicate the layer. This way you can reverse any changes that you make.
  2. Use the Color Range Tool: Go to Select > Color Range. This feature lets you adjust color selection options to refine the process.
  3. Pick the Color with the Eyedropper Tool: Use the eyedropper tool to choose the color you want to remove. You can then adjust the fuzziness setting here. It will allow you to include or exclude the nearby shades and get a seamless selection.
  4. Use Localized Color Clusters: If there are similar colors in multiple areas and you want to remove the color from one area only, you must use the localized color cluster option. This helps you select the reach of the color so that you don’t remove the same color from another area in the image.
  5. Delete the color: Once you have selected the color you want to remove correctly, use the ‘delete’ key to remove the color. You will see the transformation immediately when the particular shade is removed from the image.

Method 2: Magic Wand Tool

This is another excellent way to remove colors you do not want from an image.

  1. Open the magic wand tool: After opening your image, select the Magic Wand Tool by pressing W on your keyboard. You can also find it in the toolbar.
  2. Set the Tolerance: Adjust the tolerance setting on top to select the amount of variation you want in the color. A range of 10-35 usually works well for real-estate images. It helps you capture enough of the color without affecting the areas nearby.
  3. Select the Color to Remove: Select the color you want to remove; the tool will automatically select the colors with similar hues. You can add or subtract from the selection as needed.
  4. Invert the Delete: If you want to remove the selected color, invert the selection by pressing SHIFT + CTRL + I (Windows) or CMD + SHIFT + I (Mac). Then, simply press Delete to clear it from your image.

Method 3: Magic Eraser Tool

The magic eraser tool is pretty straightforward and works well when you want to remove colors from large areas quickly.

  1. Select the Magic Eraser Tool: After opening your image, choose the Magic Eraser Tool in the toolbar.
  2. Set Tolerance: You can adjust the tolerance to around 30 for best results. It makes the blend smooth as you remove the color.
  3. Erase: Click on the color areas you’d like to remove the color from, and Photoshop will immediately erase it, leaving your image looking clean and polished.

Removing a Specific Color in Canva

If you are not aware of advanced editing software or not familiar with using it, Canva’s Magic Eraser tool makes it simple for you to remove colors. This feature is only available for Canva Pro users.

  1. Upload Your Image: Begin by uploading your image to Canva.
  2. Click on the Magic Eraser: Go to Edit Image, and you’ll see Magic Eraser under the Tools section.
  3. Select the Color to Remove: Click on the color you want to remove. You can adjust the brush size if you’re working with larger areas.
  4. Erase: Click Erase, and Canva will automatically take care of removing that color from your image.

Removing Colors in Lightroom

Lightroom is a tool that provides you with color-mixing options. You can tweak colors in any image with a few sliders.

  1. Open the Image in Lightroom: Start by opening your image in Lightroom and go to the Color Mixer panel.
  2. Choose Your Color: In the Color Mixer, you can either use the color wheel to choose the shade you want to adjust or use the eyedropper to select it directly from the image.
  3. Adjust Saturation: Lower the saturation slider down to 50% to decrease the intensity of the color. It will give your image a clean and natural look.
  4. Fine-tune with Hue and Luminance: Adjust the Hue to manage the color tone and Luminance for brightness if you need more changes in the way the color is affecting your image.
